Partnerships in Kenya

Dorcas, her local partner North Gem, the local government of Siaya County and water company Maji Milele started a 6-year cooperation this month. These four parties form a public private partnership (PPP). This PPP will be partly funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Over 100.000 people in Siaya County will get access to clean water through this partnership.

The four partners will work together to provide clean drinking water to the local residents in Siaya County. Currently, many residents do not have access to clean drinking water and existing water services are not sustainable. The partners will rehabilitate water schemes and install prepaid meters for easy and fair collection of water fees. Residents will also receive trainings about the importance of clean toilet facilities and the use of sanitary products. And women will be motivated and supported to start their own business in sanitary products. The Netherlands Enterprising Agency contributes half of the budget, which is 2.9 million euros in total.

PPPs are partnerships between the government, the private sector, research institutions and civil society organisations. The commitment and involvement of (local) partners ensures that even after the completion of the project, residents can continue the change in their own way.
